Preoperative Preparation

Proper preparation is vital for a smooth surgery and a faster recovery. At Rafflesia Medical Centre, we prioritize your safety by ensuring you are physically and mentally ready for your procedure.

The Pre-Surgery Checklist (Actionable Advice)

This is the most helpful section for reducing patient errors and last-minute cancellations.

  • Fasting (NPO) Guidelines: Clearly state the “Midnight Rule”—no food, water, gum, or candy after 12:00 AM on the day of surgery.
  • Personal Hygiene: Advise patients to shower the night before and the morning of surgery using antibacterial soap. Specifically mention: no makeup, no nail polish, and no perfume.
  • Jewelry & Valuables: Instruct patients to leave rings, earrings, and watches at home. RMC, like most hospitals, cannot be responsible for lost items.
  • Medication Management: Remind patients to disclose all herbal supplements (like Ginkgo or Ginseng) and blood thinners (Aspirin/Warfarin), as these are usually stopped 7 days prior.

Admission & What to Pack

Since RMC is a private facility, patients often want to know exactly what they need for their specific room type.

  • Essential Documents: IC/Passport, Doctor’s Referral Letter, and Insurance/Guarantee Letter (GL).
  • Clothing: Recommend loose-fitting, front-opening clothes (easier to wear after surgery) and non-slip slippers.
  • Toiletries: While RMC provides basics, suggest bringing a personal toothbrush, comb, and a sweater (as the wards can be cold).
  • Support Person: Mention that for day surgeries, a responsible adult must be present to drive the patient home, as they cannot drive for 24 hours after anesthesia.

The "Surgery Journey" (Step-by-Step)

Demystify the process so patients know what to expect once they walk through the doors:

  • Registration: Checking in at the main reception.
  • Pre-Op Bay: Meeting the nurse for vital signs (blood pressure, temperature) and changing into a hospital gown.
  • Anaesthesia Briefing: A quick meeting with the Anaesthesiologist to discuss your health history.
  • The Procedure: Moving into the Major or Minor Operating Theater.
  • Recovery Room: Waking up under the supervision of specialized nurses before returning to the ward.

Integrated Facilities (Internal Links)

These are the departments that supports your successful surgery:

  • Radiology & Imaging: On-site X-rays & Ultrasound Services.
  • Pharmacy: For all post-operative medications and pain management kits.
  • Laboratory: Pre-admission blood tests (ECG, full blood count) to ensure the patient is fit for surgery.
